Published 10:10am ![]() WEST CALDWELL, NJ - This weekend, the West Essex community will come together in an effort to raise money to find a cure for cancer. Formerly the Relay for Life of Caldwell, the Relay for Life of West Essex has grown into a larger undertaking which now encompasses teams and individuals from all around the West Essex area. Janice Alworth Stickels is directing this year's efforts and is sending a call out to all in the community to participate in the Relay on the day of the event, or to show their support by coming in person to cheer on the walkers. Food will be available for purchase from local restaurants which will be offering refreshments during the occasion. This will be the first year the event takes place from noon until midnight instead of walking overnight as groups have in the past. So far 17 teams and 128 participants have registered and have raised over $34,400. Anyone can show up at the gathering and join the walkers by making a donation of their choosing; there is no registration fee. Additionally, a host of activities for all ages will take place throughout the day for everyone to come by and enjoy. All monies raised will benefit the American Cancer Society. The relay takes place on Saturday, June 13, from 12pm to 12am, at James Caldwell High School's Bonnel Field, located at 265 Westville Ave, West Caldwell. Relay for Life of West Essex Teams So far, 17 teams and 128 participants have raised over $34,400 for the 2015 fundraising year. Everyone is welcome to come to the walk on the day of the event, make their own donation, and participate as well. Together, all of the team and individual donations raised are collectively donated by Relay for Life of West Essex to the American Cancer Society. The registered teams are as follows:

Donate Although the Relay event happens on June 13, the account for Relay For Life Of West Essex remains open until August. The American Cancer Society is putting donation dollars to work now, investing in groundbreaking cancer research and providing free information and services to cancer patients and their caregivers. They aren't just fighting one type of cancer, they are fighting for every person threatened by every cancer. All donations fuel their progress to end this disease. Published 8:47pm WEST CALDWELL, NJ - The West Caldwell Fire Department is inviting the West Essex community to officially welcome their newest Fire Fighting Rescue Pumper at their "Wild, Wild, West Wetdown" this Saturday, May 16. The free event will be held at their firehouse from 3pm to 9pm and all are welcome. Seating with tables and chairs will be inside of the firehouse in case of rain. The station is located at 8 Fairfield Avenue, West Caldwell. COST Tickets are not required for the occasion; the event will include unlimited drinks and down-home cooking available through the purchase of a mug. In addition, there will be entertainment from a DJ, live music from Southern Steel and a bucking bull. Plastic Mug ~ $10 Free pony rides will be available from 4pm to 7pm. ![]() T-Shirts bearing this logo will also be available for sale for $20. A wetdown is a ritual celebrated by many rescue departments during which a new vehicle is put into commission by anointing it with water sprayed by another rescue apparatus. At Saturday's wetdown, the traditional hose fights are expected to take place as neighboring fire departments arrive to anoint the new engine. All guests will be able to get a closer look inside the vehicle as well.
Published 7:12pm ![]() VERONA, NJ - This weekend, Our Lady of the Lake parish is hosting a "Women's Cornerstone" retreat. The 26-hour experience is open to all women in the surrounding area, beginning on Friday, March 20, at 6:30pm and ending on Saturday, March 21, at 8pm. Participants are asked for a donation of $50 which will cover all meals, including dinner on Friday evening. Women will experience a comfortable, non-judgemental, atmosphere to enable them to grow personally in the knowledge and love of God. All participants have the option of staying overnight at the parish or sleeping at home and returning for Morning Prayer on Saturday morning. During the weekend, there will be time for private prayer, the celebration of Reconciliation and Mass. The retreat takes place on the parish grounds which is located at 32 Lakeside Avenue, Verona. Published 10:30am ![]() ROSELAND, NJ - Tonight, the Caldwell Public Library will be hosting a visit from Sci-Fi Author Richard Herr and all are welcome. Herr has had a varied career as an actor, stage manager, computer graphic expert and tonight will be discussing his comic fantasy books. The free event will take place from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on Wednesday, March 18, at the library which is located at 268 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell. Herr is expected to speak on the topic of Science Fiction and how the term "Sci-Fi" is used to describe the whole category which includes fantasy, horror, and science fiction; additionally he is expected to discuss the sub-genres like military sci-fi, altered history and superheroes. The author will read excerpts from his adult-oriented works, "Dog & Pony" and "Tales From the Starboard Cafe" and will be available to sign copies of his books. Reservations would be appreciated.

Santa is scheduled to arrive at the Caldwell Fire Department at 4:30pm, parade throughout the neighborhoods and end up at 5pm on the Caldwell Green just in time for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Following the tree lighting, everyone is invited to gather inside the Caldwell Fire House where refreshments will be served, music will be provided by DJ Joe Garamella and there will be a Holiday Auction with many prizes. The auction will be held to benefit the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Dept. Children’s Education Fund. Sunday, Dec. 21 10:30am and on Beginning at 10:30am, the Caldwell Fire Department will drive through every street in town with Santa on board handing out candy canes. The North Caldwell Fire Department will make sure Santa makes a grand entrance on one of their trucks while also giving out candy canes. The North Caldwell Boy Scouts will serve hot chocolate and cider and live music will be provided from DJ Legendery. For a special treat this year, the Dapper Dans of Harmony barber Shop Quartet will entertain the guests with a salute to the troops. In addition, the North Caldwell Girl Scouts will be accepting new, unwrapped, toys for their annual toy drive. Gifts are needed for boys and girls ages 8-15 years old. Saturday, Dec. 20 12pm Throughout the day, the North Caldwell Fire Department will give Santa a tour of the borough while greeting the children who come out to wave. The evening begins at 6:15pm with a performance from the Roseland Methodist Church Bell Choir. The bells will be followed with Christmas music until the 7pm tree lighting and the arrival of Santa Claus. Following the lighting, the borough hosts a reception with Santa which includes music and dance and refreshments. Tuesday, Dec. 16 6:15pm Borough Common 140 Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland On the first night of Chanukah, the mayor and council take part in a celebration for the Festival of Lights. Starting at 6:15pm, Rabbi Kasowitz will begin by blessing the Menorah, followed by the lighting at 6:30pm. Singing, dancing and a reception with refreshments will then take place inside the Borough Hall. Sunday, Dec. 21 3:30pm to 9pm Santa will be riding through the streets of Roseland on a Roseland Fire Engine, accompanied by a festive holiday truck, music, and lots of elves in turnout gear. Weather permitting, the parade will start on Laurel Avenue at 3:30pm and continue through the town, visiting every street. The parade completes on Passaic Avenue at approximately 9pm.
