If you've never been inside the Llewellyn Park complex in West Orange - now is your day to go. Thomas Edison's Glenmont home is open today for free tours, which means you'll be able to see inside of the residence as well as drive around the beautiful homes.
Llewellyn was America's very first planned residential community. At one time, the Colgate family lived in the development, and it was also home to abolitionist James Miller McKim who used his residence as an Underground Railroad safe house. Both Eleanor Roosevelt and Bill Clinton have visited homes here, and Whoopi Goldberg currently owns a home from where she commutes to her work in the city. Published 9:30pm ![]() CALDWELL, NJ - This weekend, the Grover Cleveland Birthplace Memorial Association will host their 25th Annual July 4 Ice Cream Social. All are welcome at the gathering which will include many family activities and entertainers, along with a patriotic salute to Independence Day. Refreshments including ice cream and popcorn will be offered to guests and the Cloverleaf Tavern will also be offering meals for sale. This year, the Association is hosting a judged Short Bread bake-off which will be awarded wth prizes. The free event will take place Rain or Shine on Saturday, July 4, from 1pm to 3pm at the historic Presidential Birthplace which is located at 207 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell. ShortBread Bake-Off This year, the Association is hosting a judged Short Bread bake-off which will be awarded wth prizes at 3pm. Adults and children are welcome to try their hand at creating the cookie using only 19th-century ingredients. The rules are as follows:
The flag ceremony will begin at 1pm and will include the reading of the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson and the flag raising will be performed by the scout honor guard. Published 11:40pm WEST CALDWELL, NJ - This weekend, members of the 15th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Company E will be pitching their tents on the grounds of the historic Zenas Crane Homestead. The Civil War reenactors will conduct military drill exercises and demonstrate the lives of Union soldiers; the public is welcome to converse with the soldiers and observe their activities. The Unit includes over 40 members from the East Coast whom regularly participate in historical heritage presentations. The free event takes place on Saturday, June 20, from 1pm to 4pm and in the evening the public are welcome back to the campsite to experience stories and songs around a campfire. Owned by Essex County, the complex is made up of many art studios where sculpture, painting, photography, and various crafts are created daily. On Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, from 11am to 5pm, the artists will showcase their innovations during their Open House and Fine Art Sale. The free event will feature open studios, a gallery exhibition, demonstrations and artwork for sale all around the Art Park which is located at 284 Beaufort Avenue, Livingston. Riker Hill Art Park sits on 42 acres which used to be a US Army Nike Missile Base in the 1950s. Essex County purchased the property from the federal government in 1974 for $1 and converted the buildings that once housed army facilities into studio space for artists. Published 6:10pm CALDWELL, NJ - This weekend will be the final weekend for the public to experience the outdoor "History on the Avenue" photo exhibit which has been taking place along Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell. Organized by the Caldwell Merchants' Association, the Exhibit features a collection of 72 photos depicting Caldwell over the past 125 years. The historical photos, taken during the 1890s through 2000, show the evolution of Caldwell's business district along Bloomfield Avenue, once known as "The Big Road." The collection contains photos of the turn of the century large homes and hotels from an era when the Caldwells were known as the "Denver of the East." Other photos capture the Great Fire of 1897, the trolley that ran east to Newark until 1952, and Memorial Day parades in the early years of the twentieth century. All of the photos are enlarged and have descriptions attached to them. Those who would like to see all of the photos are encouraged to pick up a free self-guided tour brochure available at most of the shops along the Avenue.
