All children, ages 8 and older, are welcome at the free event, "Give Back to Your Heroes," during which the children will put together Compassion Kits for deployed soldiers. The gathering takes place on Thursday, July 16, at 6pm at the library which is located at 261 Hollywood Avenue, Fairfield. Seeking Donations

Published 10:10am ![]() WEST CALDWELL, NJ - This weekend, the West Essex community will come together in an effort to raise money to find a cure for cancer. Formerly the Relay for Life of Caldwell, the Relay for Life of West Essex has grown into a larger undertaking which now encompasses teams and individuals from all around the West Essex area. Janice Alworth Stickels is directing this year's efforts and is sending a call out to all in the community to participate in the Relay on the day of the event, or to show their support by coming in person to cheer on the walkers. Food will be available for purchase from local restaurants which will be offering refreshments during the occasion. This will be the first year the event takes place from noon until midnight instead of walking overnight as groups have in the past. So far 17 teams and 128 participants have registered and have raised over $34,400. Anyone can show up at the gathering and join the walkers by making a donation of their choosing; there is no registration fee. Additionally, a host of activities for all ages will take place throughout the day for everyone to come by and enjoy. All monies raised will benefit the American Cancer Society. The relay takes place on Saturday, June 13, from 12pm to 12am, at James Caldwell High School's Bonnel Field, located at 265 Westville Ave, West Caldwell. Relay for Life of West Essex Teams So far, 17 teams and 128 participants have raised over $34,400 for the 2015 fundraising year. Everyone is welcome to come to the walk on the day of the event, make their own donation, and participate as well. Together, all of the team and individual donations raised are collectively donated by Relay for Life of West Essex to the American Cancer Society. The registered teams are as follows:

The American Cancer Society is putting donation dollars to work now, investing in groundbreaking cancer research and providing free information and services to cancer patients and their caregivers. The event is their only fundraising event each year and allows the organization to raise funds which it then disperses to needy individuals and charitable organizations throughout the West Essex area. Tickets include Casino gaming chips, a buffet dinner, Cocktails and dessert. Those who win chips then trade them in for tickets which are used at the Tricky Tray at the end of the evening. Offering many different types of adult and children's comic books and graphic novels, along with related toys and t-shirts, the sale will also feature comic book creators and sketch artists. The free event will take place on Saturday, May 30 from 10am to 6pm, at the Barnabas Health Office, 95 Old Short Hills Road, West Orange. Thousands of comic books will be on sale, from Archie to Vertigo, including books for children and adults. The public is invited to enjoy the free event located outdoors at the Verona Civic Center. Published 8:47pm WEST CALDWELL, NJ - The West Caldwell Fire Department is inviting the West Essex community to officially welcome their newest Fire Fighting Rescue Pumper at their "Wild, Wild, West Wetdown" this Saturday, May 16. The free event will be held at their firehouse from 3pm to 9pm and all are welcome. Seating with tables and chairs will be inside of the firehouse in case of rain. The station is located at 8 Fairfield Avenue, West Caldwell. COST Tickets are not required for the occasion; the event will include unlimited drinks and down-home cooking available through the purchase of a mug. In addition, there will be entertainment from a DJ, live music from Southern Steel and a bucking bull. A wetdown is a ritual celebrated by many rescue departments during which a new vehicle is put into commission by anointing it with water sprayed by another rescue apparatus. At Saturday's wetdown, the traditional hose fights are expected to take place as neighboring fire departments arrive to anoint the new engine. All guests will be able to get a closer look inside the vehicle as well.
Published 4:53pm ROSELAND, NJ - This week, the Children's Corner Preschool is hosting their first annual "RJ Mercado Scholarship Pancake Supper" fundraiser. The fundraising event, a celebration of life honoring the short time RJ spent at the preschool, will benefit a scholarship fund in his name. The public is welcome to attend the gathering which takes place on Tuesday, May 12, from 5pm to 7pm, at the school located at 40 Freeman Street, Roseland. Tickets Children's Corner staff members will be making the "all-you-can-eat" pancakes; all of the supplies for the supper have been donated. Scholarship Fund Donations In celebration of his life, The Children’s Corner has established the RJ Mercado Scholarship Fund which will help former Children’s Corner students, starting with the class of 2018 (the school's first graduating class), as they are leaving high school to further their education. Published 5:05pm ![]() CALDWELL, NJ - Tonight, Carolyn Mastrangelo and Barbara Geiger, both of Roseland, are hosting an event in partnership with the Cloverleaf Tavern in an effort to raise money for their Annual Running 4 Answers 5K Race and 2-mile Fun Run / Fitness Walk. Cloverleaf diners who purchase a meal, including take-out, on Monday, April 20, between the hours of 5pm to 9pm, will have a portion of their check donated by the Cloverleaf to the race fund. No reservations are necessary, but diners will need to let the server know that they are there supporting the Running 4 Answers fundraiser. The tavern is located at 395 Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell. All proceeds from the fundraiser tonight will benefit the Running 4 Answers Cure Alzheimer’s Fund; last year the local race raised $40,000 and over the past five years it has raised a total of $175,000. The mission of the fund is to put all dollars raised towards research and so far that research has identified more than 70 genes linked to the disease. According to its website, one hundred percent of all funds raised for the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund go directly towards researching a cure for Alzheimers. So far the group has donated over $15 million to research in twenty-four different institutions across the country and all research studies done are shared among the participating medical research institutions.
