Published 8:45pm ![]() LIVINGSTON, NJ - This weekend the public is invited to discover the creative environment which exists at the Riker Hill Art Park. Owned by Essex County, the complex is made up of many art studios where sculpture, painting, photography, and various crafts are created daily. On Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, from 11am to 5pm, the artists will showcase their innovations during their Open House and Fine Art Sale. The free event will feature open studios, a gallery exhibition, demonstrations and artwork for sale all around the Art Park which is located at 284 Beaufort Avenue, Livingston. Riker Hill Art Park sits on 42 acres which used to be a US Army Nike Missile Base in the 1950s. Essex County purchased the property from the federal government in 1974 for $1 and converted the buildings that once housed army facilities into studio space for artists. Published 9:51pm ![]() CALDWELL, NJ - This weekend, the Caldwell Merchants Association will host their sixth annual "Art on the Avenue" featuring local artists and fine art crafters exhibiting their works along Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell. Additionally, musical selections will be performed on the Caldwell Green throughout the afternoon and winners of the Student Art Show, “Shop Downtown,” will be on display. Some of the local restaurants will also be offering discounts for the occasion. The widely supported community event allows strollers to view and purchase fine art, photography, sculpture and (juried) fine art crafts while walking along both sides of Bloomfield Avenue. The free event will take place Saturday, May 30, from 10am to 5pm. Juried Artwork Last year fifty-eight artists participated and over $1100 in prizes were awarded in the categories of fine art, photography and sculpture after being chosen by professional judges. While many participants are well known in their fields, Art on the Avenue is open to new artists as well. There is also a student's art contest, open to all elementary through high school age students from schools in the surrounding West Essex towns. En Plein Air Artists Fencing is provided for artists to display their work, but several en plein air artists will be painting along the Avenue while the exhibit takes place. Published 6:10pm CALDWELL, NJ - This weekend will be the final weekend for the public to experience the outdoor "History on the Avenue" photo exhibit which has been taking place along Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell. Organized by the Caldwell Merchants' Association, the Exhibit features a collection of 72 photos depicting Caldwell over the past 125 years. The historical photos, taken during the 1890s through 2000, show the evolution of Caldwell's business district along Bloomfield Avenue, once known as "The Big Road." The collection contains photos of the turn of the century large homes and hotels from an era when the Caldwells were known as the "Denver of the East." Other photos capture the Great Fire of 1897, the trolley that ran east to Newark until 1952, and Memorial Day parades in the early years of the twentieth century. All of the photos are enlarged and have descriptions attached to them. Those who would like to see all of the photos are encouraged to pick up a free self-guided tour brochure available at most of the shops along the Avenue. Published 8:14pm CALDWELL, NJ - Award-winning fine artist, Lisa Palombo, will be hosting her 14th Annual Holiday Open Studio this weekend at 55 Mountain Avenue, Caldwell. The free event is open to the public and will run from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22 and 23. ![]() Each year, Palombo opens her art studio and gallery to the public to showcase new original, oil-on-linen and acrylic paintings consisting of impressionistic-style landscapes, still lifes and florals in various sizes and subject matter. This year she will be displaying paintings from her new “Horse Power” series of paintings inspired by the speed and power of racehorses.
Silent Auction Throughout the weekend, Palombo will be accepting silent bids on the purchase of a painting she will create Friday evening. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites all senior citizen resident artists to participate in the 2014 Essex County Senior Citizens Juried Art Show and Exhibition. Both professional and non-professional seniors, at least 60-years old, are welcome to submit their artwork, for free, on Thursday, Aug. 7, to the Essex County Hospital Center. The center is located at 204 Grove Avenue, Cedar Grove. Artwork Submission Information All entries must be delivered on Thursday, Aug. 7, between 10am and 12pm, to the Essex County Hospital Center.
