Caldwell's David Taubenfeld Memorialized by Dedication of New Congregation Agudath Israel Torah7/3/2014
![]() CALDWELL, NJ - On June 9, Congregation Agudath Israel, in Caldwell, dedicated a new Torah scroll which was donated by long-time members Nat and Bea Taubenfeld, in memory of their late son David. David Taubenfeld grew up in Caldwell and died in 2005 of a brain tumor at the age of 38. Taubenfeld left behind his wife Felicia and two children, Gabrielle and Gordon. According to friends, he was known for his warm spirit and tremendous acts of loving-kindness during his lifetime. “David Taubenfeld grew up in Caldwell as did his mother, Bea. ![]() To commission the handwritten scroll, over 200 congregation members and Taubenfeld family and friends donated over $200,000, as a tribute to David and in support of the synagogue. ![]() Over 350 Congregation Agudath Israel congregants, friends and families met first at the Taubenfelds’ Caldwell home on Hanford Place and then walked together down Bloomfield Avenue carrying the Torah to its new home at 20 Academy Road. Although it differs from one community to the next, the dedication of a new Torah is traditionally celebrated in the same manner as the biblical account of King David welcoming the Holy Ark into his capital. ![]() Once at the synagogue, a special celebratory ceremony took place in the sanctuary which featured recollections of David’s lifetime and musical performances by the congregation's choirs. |
