WEST ORANGE, NJ - A quick moving fire started around 5am Friday morning at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Main Street, quickly devastating the 188-years-old Gothich Revival Church. Once home to a thriving Episocopalian West Orange community, the church has most recently been used by a Methodist congregation, La Primera Iglesia Evangelica Metodista Libra de los Oranges.
.In 2011, Preservation New Jersey, a group which promotes the protection of historically significant locations in the state, listed St. Mark's on it's list of Top 10 Most Endangered Sites. The group noted that the original portion of the brownstone church was built in 1827, while a larger section designed by the highly-respected architect Richard Upjohn, was added in 1860.
