When officers arrived they found a 1998 Mack truck, which belonged to Suburban Disposal of Fairfield, flipped over and on its side. The first responders assisted the driver, Gloria Washington, 42, of Newark, out of her cab by removing the front windshield. Washington was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"Preliminary investigation indicates that the garbage truck may have been having some problems
with leaking hydraulic fluid
resulting in the driver trying to get back
to the company’s Montesano Road depot,"
Police Chief Anthony G. Manna commented.
"It appears that the vehicle was going faster than it should have been as it exited Route 46 West onto the Gately Overpass which ultimately resulted in it tipping over.
We were extremely lucky that no other vehicles were entering onto Route 46 from the overpass
or else we may have had a fatality."
