New Jersey Bans Single-Use Plastic, Paper Bags and Styrofoam Cups and Containers in All Stores and Food Businesses Staring May 2022

This morning New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed Senate bill S864 which prohibits the use of single-use plastic and paper bags in all stores and food service businesses throughout the state. The ban will go into effect starting May, 2022, and is expected to be a significant step in reducing the pollution and harm done to the environment.

• Single use paper bags
• Styrofoam disposable food containers
• Styrofoam disposable cups​

PRODUCTS PERMITTED

• Reusable bags
• Plastic Straws, only upon request, starting Nov. 2021

PRODUCTS EXEMPT UNTIL MAY, 2024

• Disposable, long-handled Styrofoam soda spoons used for thick drinks
• Styrofoam cups used for hot foods that are two ounces or less
• Styrofoam trays for poultry, fish and butchered meat
• Any food product pre-packaged by the manufacturer with a Styrofoam food service product
